During my break - this story came to me and it started to keep me up at night because I could not get it out to my head. I decided to write it and give it a chance. I never intended to post it. But as I kept writing, it developed into something with spice and flavor. I decided to share it. Guys, I say this at every fic drop, but I am really scared about this one. I am going to ask you to please not compare this to my other stories, just try to evaluate based on its own individual merit. Let it have it's own little place.
Full disclosure, I have never really watched a mafia fic in my entire life because the images of gore bother me. However, I decided to write a fic that depicts some of those same images that I have always sworn off. Why? Because I truly want to explore the human element of being caught up in this type of lifestyle either by choice or by force. So many stories make mafia men out to be robots. But they aren't. They are real humans who suffer from conflict and moral dilemmas just like we do. I wanted to play around with that concept here.
This story is deeply plotted (What else is new?) but it is not too difficult to follow. What I really want everyone to notice is the emotional push and pull that constantly surrounds these characters. They aren't so different from you and me, but they live very different lives. They are fallible and deeply flawed. They make horrible decisions based on emotions, but they are also emotionless. I tried to weave a story that's intriguing, but not over the top. My focus is on how the corporate life and mafia life intertwine and the difficulty caused by each.
Now a word about my main characters. I have never written them this way. I love them so very much in real life, so it's difficult not to make them perfect. But these guys in this story are NOT perfect. In fact, they are borderline evil. Not good people - but their motivation for being this way is very interesting. I also played around with the element of religious persecution. If you are easily offended by talk of religion or religious judgment, and criticism of religious beliefs, then this story is probably not for you.
